YWCA Camp Cavell river trip… notes from our participants. “The river was beautiful! I felt such a sense of achievement. It felt so good to know I had learned so much. Everyone was just great. I loved it.” Kathy is 52 years old and has been involved in our family and women’s weekends at camp for many years. She serves on our committee as volunteer coordinator and is a reflexologist. This was her second trip with us, the first was in a canoe and this one in kayaks. Kathy Walls

“I work for the electric company and have always been amazed at the skill of our line men climbing our poles. The technical tree climbing piece of the YWCA Camp Cavell’s Enrichment Weekends is the closest I will ever get to being able to “climb a tree” to the heights they do! “As a girl I always enjoyed the thrill of climbing trees and as a 50 year old women I still do!” “This being my “50 year jubilee celebration” I decided I should take sailing lessons so my husband and I could do something together. The first time out we went over in the Detroit river… after that experience it took a lot to decide to get into a kayak...being under protection of Jill and Jeanne I was able to once again get in the water… I was not sure I could do it… but I did and it was wonderful” Nicki attended our Women’s Enrichment Weekend and decided to take the adventure track along with some crafts and of course a bit of the spa offerings. For her adventures she tried kayaking on the Black river and did her first climb with our Technical Tree Climbing Program. Nicki Moss

“These trips started out as a way to give women a chance to do things that they might have missed out on when they were younger, or raising families, or going to college. We found the river scenery to be soothing and spectacular, but the trip is REALLY about the people you meet, the conversations and experiences you share, and the fun memories you take home”. Jeanne is our YWCA Camp Cavell Committee Chair (and retired Detroit Police Sergeant). She led the campaign to purchase the kayaks and equipment to take women and children on tripping programs. She loves river kayaking and wanted to share the experience with others. Jeanne is also a volunteer instructor for our kayaking and fishing programs. Jeanne Lilienthal |
