Reel in a Good Time!

Beginning and Intermediate Skills

This awesome week is all about fish!  Our fishing guys and girls will learn to catch’em, clean’em and cook ‘em.  We’ll have classes in casting, rigging rods, knot tying, fishing etiquette,

and stream, pond, and lake ecology.  The emphasis, as always, will be on having fun!

Our fishing week will be filled with fun activities to improve our fishing skills, swimming, canoeing, fly tying and spinner building.  We’ll take several day trips to nearby fishing spots and relax on an overnight camping trip.  If we get lucky, our fishermen will cook their day’s catch over our campfire and tell fish stories into the night.

We will issue each of our fishing guys and girls a day pack, small tackle box and two rods and reels (one fly rod, one spin casting rod).  It is essential that campers bring hard-soled water shoes, rain gear, bug repellent, sun screen, a hat and sunglasses.

Our target fish will be bass, bluegill, perch, catfish, and crappie.  Fish On!

Feel free to contact the Fishing Instructor if you have questions.

Fly Fishing, Spinning, & Spin Casting Fishermen Welcome!

This trip was created especially for the guys and girls who have participated in previous fishing camps or who have some family fishing experience.  Feel free to contact our Fishing Instructor with questions.

The plan is to leave Camp Cavell and head up to the Grayling area for four days and three nights of fun filled camping, fishing and kayaking.  We’ll try our hand at fishing the famous AuSable River and the “DNR designated and trout stocked” Kneff Lake.  Time permitting, we’ll check out other nearby hot fishing spots.

Because our first goal is to make sure this fishing adventure is fun for our campers, we also build in lots of time for swimming, kayaking, and inner tubing in the pristine waters near our camp.  Campers and staff work together to make this an exciting and fun filled experience for all.

Camp Cavell will supply all rods, reels and necessary fishing, group camping and water safety equipment for our fishermen (waders and boots to fit most sizes).  Fishermen are welcome to bring their personal rod and reel if they so desire.

Never fear, this trip also includes a feast of trout cooked by our fishermen over our campfire! This is a truly delicious ending to a fabulous week!

The fish we are targeting include rainbow trout, brook trout, bass, bluegills, and crappie.

All campers participating in our fishing programs will be given a tippy test on the lake using our canoes and kayaks (wearing a life jacket) prior to the trip.  We will familiarize each camper with boating safety basics prior to going on the water to fish.  In addition to our fishing instructor, counselors and a certified life guard accompany each fishing excursion.
