Born June 18, 1931, Bob grew up and worked in Windsor Ontario.  His playground as a youngster was the Detroit River and he forever after had a love for the Greatlakes.

He graduated as a Plumber Apprentice in 1949 and worked in that field in Windsor, and Elliot Lake, Ont. until he moved to Michigan in 1961.

Bob took a job at Great Lakes Steel working up through the ranks finally retiring in 1989 as General Forman in charge of Ore Dock Maintenance.  During that time he moved his family out to the country in Taylor, Michigan.

Shortly after his retirement he was recruited by his daughter Jill Laidlaw the Camp Director to take the position of Maintenance Supervisor at YWCA Camp Cavell in Lexington, Michigan where he had already volunteered for many years.  Dee, his wife, worked as the Camp Business Manager.  They both were appreciated and loved by the staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Bob’s great passion was to sail and he spent many wonderful hours with his family on Lake Erie.  He especially enjoyed island hoping and sailing in the Detroit River.  Bob also loved sharing stories about the lake freighters and the history of the Great Lakes.

Robert is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rhea (Dee) (nee Jacques).  Dee was truly the love of his life.  They were forever found holding hands and smiling at one another at every family event.
He is also survived by his four children, daughter Jody and her husband Peter Schoeps of Farmington Hills, daughter Jill and husband Thomas Rutkowski of Lexington, son Jay and wife Karen of Dundee, and son Joey and his wife Dana, of Ypsilanti, his four grandchildren, Nick, Chris, and Patrick Schoeps, and Colin Laidlaw, his brother Ralph of Morgan Hill, California, and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

Robert N. Laidlaw, age 75, died on December 14, 2006. Bob died peacefully with his family at Port Huron Hospital after a struggle to recover from a stroke.  Bob was a kind loving man and he will be forever remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
